Love Manifested in Action

By T. W. Parker

The story of Jesus exemplifies love manifested in action. Jesus Christ embodies divine love in His coming and the cross. The Scriptures state, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son” (John 3:16, NIV). Moreover, Paul elaborates, “God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). In addition, John adds to this testimony: “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him” (1 John. 4:9). As in the (OT), in the (NT) practical consequences follow. Jesus exhibits a new paradigm for loving others (John. 13:1-17). Above all, this love serves. This love shows hospitality. This love washes the feet of others. We must love like that as believers and followers of Christ. Love is the new commandment (John. 13:34).

As a result, it is new because the story of Christ informs it. Further, “This kind of love never fails (1 Cor. 13:8). We do not manufacture this love; it is a fruit of the Spirit of Christ living within us (Gal. 5:22). These virtues are the characteristics of Christ Himself, who clothed Himself with humanity “leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps (1 Peter. 2:21).
Indeed, Christ’s demonstration of what love is all about is the reason for reflection. We must also manifest this love in our words, deeds, and overall presence toward others not just this holiday season, but consistently throughout the year. Our commitment to love should be unwavering, just as Christ’s love for us is constant and enduring.
